What is Infrared?

How does the Infrared Sauna work?
Infrared saunas will heat your body, not the air. The temperature inside the sauna does not dictate the benefit or quality of your sauna session. Keep this in mind when seeing and experiencing the ambient temperature inside the sauna.
In their book Beyond Antibiotics, Drs. Michael A. Schmidt et al. state the following: “Saunas are being used by some doctors to stimulate the release of toxins from the bodies of their patients. They have found that a lower temperature (105-125 F) sauna taken for a longer duration is most beneficial. These low temperatures stimulate a fat sweat, which eliminates toxins stored in fat, as opposed to the high temperature sauna, which encourages a water sweat.”
Please follow your doctor’s instructions if they recommend using a lower temperature (which is still beneficial).
What should I wear?
Some like to wear their bathing suits or undergarments when in the sauna. We recommend bringing loose, comfortable clothing to change into after your session.
What should I bring for my session?
We recommend loose fitting clothing or a bathing suit for your session. We provide towels in the room, but many clients also like to bring their own large beach towels. We suggest you bring a change of loose, comfortable clothing to change into after your session, shower shoes or flip flops, and a bottle of water.
How important is my water consumption?
You must have water before and after your sauna session. Take a bottle in the sauna with you if you wish, but the water will not stay cool in the sauna. We recommend that you sit your bottle right outside the sauna door so you have access if you need it.
How long should I remain in the sauna?
A sauna session should at least last 8 minutes. The positive healthy effects of a sauna session arise if the pores open and the blood vessels are dilated through the heat: Through the increased body temperature and the sweat production, the body is able to bring toxic substances from the inside to the outside, the metabolism and the purification get stimulated and the general state of health is improved. To achieve this process, the heat must influence the body for a longer time. Generally recommended is a time of 8 – 15 minutes, in order to strengthen the body but not overstrain it. The first session of sweating should take between 8 and 10 minutes, every further session should last 10 to 15 minutes.
For beginners, we recommend starting with10 minutes until you learn how your body reacts to the sauna sensation. Inhale and exhale through your mouth, taking deep breaths. Your lungs are working harder to expel toxins as your body temperature rises and demands more oxygen.
How long is my sauna session?
We book your sauna session for 45 minutes. Please arrive on time or early. We try to accommodate as many of our clients as possible, so we book the rooms back to back with enough time in between to clean and get things ready for the next client. Because of this we ask that you arrive 5 minutes prior to your appointment start time and make sure you vacate the room when your booked time has ended.
What do I do after my session?
Step out of the sauna and drink water to replace water lost through perspiration. Water also helps facilitate toxin removal through your digestive system. Do not drink too much water – more than a liter during a break session – in order to prevent dizziness from a full stomach.
When possible, take a cold shower. This helps to improve circulation in the capillaries and tightens muscles. Perspiration eventually evaporates, but taking a shower removes salty components and other debris on your skin.
Can anyone use the sauna?
If you have a medical condition, such as heart disease or pregnancy, talk to your doctor before using a sauna. Do not drink alcohol at any time before or during your sauna session. If you feel dizzy at any time in the sauna, step out and allow yourself to cool down naturally, without a cold shower.
What are some tips for the sauna?
- We do not recommend the sauna for pregnant women.
- Please no unsupervised children under the age of 16.
- Please lock the door behind you in the sauna room.
- Please no shoes in the sauna.
- Please do not eat in the sauna rooms.
- Please do not bring outside beverages into the sauna rooms; other than water.
- Please shut the glass door gently.
- Please refrain from applying any oils or lotions to your skin prior to entering the sauna.
